Events for Fall '07

November

Battle over Beverages

The Greens co-hosted an event with Students for Worker's Rights and NYPIRG on the impacts of the bottled beverage industry. Each group talked about the impact that bottled drinks have on economics, people's health, the environment, and human rights. We had a full house of about 50 people made up of mostly non-group members. A highly successful event overall.

October-Mid November

Dave Lussier for County Legislature

Almost all of the Campus Greens energy was poured into helping get Dave Lussier elected to the county legislature. Countless hours were spent by Jane, Peter, Luke, Dave, and countless other local Greens to try to achieve victory. Despite their best efforts and an election night victory, the absentee ballots proved themselves as the deciding voice and Dave's opponent was the winner. A hard-fought and well-run campaign may have ended in a loss, but the Greens will soldier on trying to make the City of Albany a better place.

September

Neighborhood Cleanup

This was the first event for the Campus Greens of the Fall semester. In conjunction with Dave Lussier's campaign for Albany County Legislature, the Greens helped clean up Morris Street in the 7th District on September 15. We were able to pick up a lot of trash and trimmed the hedges in front of numerous homes. If you're interested in helping with the neighborhood cleanups, we will be continuing them for as long as possible. Meeting times are 11:00 AM at Dave Lussier's apartment every Saturday.

First Meeting for the Fall '07 Semester

Our first meeting of the year was Wednesday the 12th. We had a few new people come out to hear about the Greens and eat pizza who seemed genuinely interested in what we do. As always, our core dedicated members (both students and graduates) came to the meeting which is greatly appreciated. For those of you who couldn't make the meeting, we will be having another coming up on Thursday this week. Pizza will again be served and we will be hanging out after the meeting for anyone interested. If you can make it, come!

Events from Spring 2007

Green Week 2007

Green Week was a resounding success last semester with numerous events in celebration of Earth Day. Read on for a synopsis of the various events the Campus Greens put on for it last semester.

Global Climate Change Debate

A debate between the College Republicans and representatives from the Campus Greens and Environmental Taskforce regarding the impact human activity has had on the change on Earth's climate. This event took place just before finals week last semester due to logistical problems, but we still consider it part of our Green Week program. Both teams put on a strong case for their respective sides and allowed for a very civil and informative debate for all participants and viewers.

Talking to a Prohibitionist," presented by Mitch Earleywine, Associate Professor of Psychology

A lecture/workshop by Professor Mitchell Earleywine on how to debate those who support the continued criminalization of marijuana. This was co-sponsored by the Campus Greens and NORML. This event was attended by approximately seventy-five students on April 20, 2007. Professor Earleywine dispelled many of the myths surrounding the use of marijuana and its impact on society. It was a very interactive, informative, and entertaining presentation that the Campus Greens thanks Professor Earleywine for taking the time to put on.

Vegan Baked Goods Giveaway

In order to draw attention to the impact that animal agriculture has on our environment, the Campus Greens organized a vegan baked goods giveaway. In addition to delicious cakes and cupcakes made by some of our members, information sheets about the farmed animal industry were given away to educate students on the impact their diets have on our world. Needless to say, we were able to give away all of our free food.

Green Prom

No Campus Green event would be complete without a party! The Green Prom saw a huge number of people come out to celebrate Earth Day. A lot of very fancy (and not so fancy) outfits were seen and the Greens were able to raise more money for our already substantial treasury.

What Direction Should we Take in Iraq?

Another debate between the Campus Greens and the College Republicans. This event centered on the situation in Iraq and the best possible way to resolve the endemic violence there. Another high attendance meeting of different ideas and viewpoints that would not immediately be defined as civil, but was certainly entertaining for all those present.

Campus Greens' Conference

Or the Green Conference as it is also known, was a huge undertaking by numerous local groups, Green Party politicians, and activists to develop a stronger presence in the capital area and the state as a whole. A number of workshops on the history of the Greens, methods to strengthen campus activism, ways foster cooperation between groups, and numerous other subjects were presented. The Green Conference was an enriching experience for the Albany activist community which we hope to repeat in the future.

Iraq War Protest, 2007 Edition

The on campus protest for the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. This year featured a "Die-In" of volunteers and Greens and the reading of those killed in the conflict (both Iraqis and American soldiers). We also drew chalk outlines to represent thousands of people killed outside of the Campus Center, Library, and PAC. Strategic placement of the "Dead" kept this event as visible as possible, but the protest saw little traffic due to the always hateful Albany weather. As long as the war continues we will be continuing our anti-war activities and so, if you want to join us in our protests of inherently immoral wars, come to the meetings!

Events from Fall 2006

Civil Liberties and the War on Terror

A debate between the Campus Greens and College Republicans on the conflict between the preservation of individual rights and the methods used by the United States government to defend the country from terrorism. This event was held on November 12, 2006 in the Humanities building on campus.
